Senior Manager, System Engineering

Summary/objective

The Senior Manager, System Engineering will lead a team of system engineers to maintain, evolve, and manage multiple complex cloud and on-prem engineering environments. Will participate in the development and evolution of the technology strategy and ensure technology solutions comply with applicable standards. Advance modern, Agile / Kanban and ITIL delivery practices and evangelize great design, engineering and organizational practices. Will have accountability for the production environment performance and availability (system health, resiliency, performance, security, enterprise data management standards, audit exams and reviews).


Core Job Duties

  • Lead a team charged with building, configuring, maintaining, and supporting a complex server environment which includes Windows and Linux platforms in the Azure, AWS, and other cloud as well as, on-prem environments across the U.S
  • Manage relationships with business and technology partners
  • Help drive Enterprise architecture & shared services decisions for systems engineering.
  • Responsible for understanding the broader strategic goals and objectives of the company
  • Configuration management automation.
  • Oversee operational support of system engineering services in all environments
  • Provide systems design leadership to system engineers and develop solution designs as per the established standards on various platforms (Azure, AWS, on-prem, etc.)
  • Serve as Subject Matter Expert (SME) for ITIL / ITSM servicing and support processes
  • Accountable for the infrastructure and configuration of cloud solutions
  • Design and oversee Monitoring and Alerting for key systems and services
  • Document/update runbooks for operational support of infrastructure and configuration
  • Oversee 3rd party run support as well as internal dashboard, monitoring, and alert systems (NOC)
  • Manage and oversee continuity including backup, restore and disaster recovery
  • Manage and oversee regular (at least quarterly) backup restores of servers and storage
  • Work with IT stakeholders to identify and remedy cost savings opportunities
  • Produce operational SLA compliance report on monthly & quarterly basis
  • Collaborate with customers and internal teams on infrastructure and configuration needs, best practices, and priorities

Job Complexity

Works on issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth knowledge of organizational objectives. Implements strategic policies when selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Establishes and assures adherence to budgets, schedules, work plans, and performance requirements..


Interaction

Regularly interacts with senior management or executive levels on matters concerning several functional areas, divisions, and/or customers. Requires the ability to change the thinking of, or gain acceptance from, others in sensitive situations, without damage to the relationship.


Supervision

Typically manages activities of two or more sections or departments. Develops proven structure and processes that helps their team achieve results. Exercises supervision in terms of costs, methods, and staffing. In some instances, this manager may have subordinate supervisors.


Experience

Typically requires a Bachelor's degree and 8+ years of direct experience, with 5+ years of management experience.


Scope

Establishes operational objectives and work plans, and delegates assignments to subordinates. Senior management reviews objectives to determine success of operation.

Involved in developing, modifying, and executing company policies that affect immediate operations and may also have company-wide effect. Leads hiring efforts for their team and determines headcount.


Discretion

Erroneous decisions will result in critical delay(s) in schedules and/or unit operations and may jeopardize overall business activities.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in systems engineering, computer science or ralted technical field
  • 5-8 years' experience with Azure and/or AWS hosting (SaaS, IaaS, etc.)
  • 5+ years leadership experience
  • Strong platform engineering background automating provisioning of resources in cloud environments
  • Experience building infrastructure as code pipelines
  • Experience in middleware webserver environments and runtime components
  • Understanding of micro service environments, tools and technologies (Kubernetes, Nodejs, Redis, Springboot, etc.)
  • Ability to lead and motivate highly skilled middleware and cloud engineers
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Experience using Agile, Kanban and/or ITIL /ITSM methodology and efficiencies within
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to change
  • Strong writing and presentation skills at all levels of the organization

Physical Demands

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds.


Travel Required

Yes, up to 15% domestic travel may be required.
